Here’s the trailer for the new Great War aviation movie, Flyboys.
It looks like it’s got some good action sequences, but I’ve been alerted – the film-makers have included a black American flyer, which is politically-wishful thinking. However – Eugene Bullard, a black American, did fly for France. When America entered the war, he applied to transfer to the US Army Air Corps, but was rejected simply because he was black. And that’s the way it was.

Ah, ‘From the producers of The Patriot’ – truly an indication of historical accuracy!
The single best bit of the trailer has to be one of the pilots declaring ‘You have to find your own meaning in this war’ – which does kind of encapsulate what we’re all studying. I need to find some way to clip that bit and put it on my website.
Some of the clever people who use YouTube do remixes of trailers, chopping them up and adding their own soundtrack. I wish I had the skill – this would be a great candidate for the technique.
FLYBOYS has opened in the US and I’ve seen it. It might be described as an archtypal war film – a group of young men of diverse backgrounds and temperments join a military unit and, under the guidance of an older professional soldier, bond as a unit as they first prepare for and then engage in combat. As to be expected, some will be killed or grievoulsy wounded before the film ends. Only one character takes a cynical view of the war, which in general is presented as a naked act of aggresson by Germany (I assume this film will be released in Germany, I wonder what the reaction there will be.) The film is fairly well done, no one is likely to compare it favorably to, say, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, but its not badly done either. The aerial combat (and other flying) scenes are pretty impressive. My only real complaint about the film are that it creates the impression that during aerial combat it is easy to make and maintain eye contact not only with members of your own squadron, but also with the Germans you are fighting against.

Airships ahoy!
Some recent airship sightings:
An airship is currently gracing Melbourne skies, thanks to Holden. I’ve seen it but not with a camera handy, so this picture by Dr Snafu will have to serve. It’s nice to see it floating around, but at on…
