Muirhead Bone

At http://www.vlib.us/medical/mbone/mbonedex.htm you can find a selection of Muirhead Bone’s drawings from his part-work The Western Front. They are on a site devoted to the medical history of the war, and show the treatment and transport of the wounded.

The website does not mention that the captions to the sketches were written by C.E.Montague. They are models of caption-writing, elegant and precise – but it’s interesting to think that these positive snippets (published with a foreword by Douglas Haig) were written by the man who was at the same time noticing the kinds of behaviour he would describe in Honours Easy.
