Selling “Mary Postgate”

In The Times of August 20th, 1915, there is an advertisement for the September issue of Nash’s Magazine:

They’re  not wrong in saying that this story shows Kipling at his best – but the invitation to the reader to identify with Mary Postgate in her situation is an interesting hint about how the story was received at the time. One wonders what Kipling thought of this advert. I doubt that he was consulted about it.
