White Women and Black Men

Surfing the back numbers of The Times can unearth some odd little bits of social history. I was taken with this tiny item from February 1919:


The pompous disapproval of the authorities ( “This class of offence was becoming very common.”) contrasts so tellingly with the rebellious behaviour of the women (referred to as “girls” and indeed behaving girlishly by running away while the policewoman is delivering a serious warning). This clipping could be the basis for a rather good movie…
