John Shapcott, who is organising the annual Arnold Bennett Society conference at Stoke, has sent me this cartoon from 1917, showing Bennett and Wells as war correspondents competing at the Front.
The cartoon suits the theme of this year’s conference, which is Bennett and Wells: Their Friendship, Fiction and Films. It is co-sponsored by the H.G.Wells Society.
I shall be giving a paper contrasting the ways that Wells and Bennett tackled the difficulty of writing fiction about a war of which they had no direct experience, with special reference to Wells’s Boon and Mr Britling, and Bennett’s The Roll-Call. Richard Benefer will give a paper about their work as war correspondents.
The conference will be on Saturday June 6th. Details can be found at the website of the Arnold Bennett Society.
