The Bobby Britt scandal

Anyone who is, like me, interested in the shadier side of London’s social history during the 1920s and earlier will enjoy the piece about the Bobby Britt scandal, on the Another Nickel in the Machine website. It shows that dancing as Salome could still get you into trouble, a decade after the Maud Allen case.

The article includes a brief history of naughty activities at the Empire, Leicester Square, and a clip from the 1923 silent film featuring Nazimova as Salome, with a wonderfully lascivious Herod enjoying her performance.

Thanks to the incomparable West End Whingers for pointing me in this direction.
