This essay first appeared in the collection Middlebrow Wodehouse, edited by Anne Rea, 2015. It tries to explain how Wodehouse’s absence from Britain during the war years affected his reaction to the conflict, and compares his writing during these years with that of his brother Armine, who enlisted in the Scots Guards, and was wounded on the Somme.
